I've never been someone who's had someone they admire, a hero-like figure you could say. I think there are many great men, but the man part always seems to get in the way because we are flawed. Even the most stoic of beings can be enticed to wrongdoing.
I've never been a military person. I hate the thought of losing your own identity for someone else's agenda. I don't want others to tell me who I should hate which is why I never watch the news (Again a story for another time). I understand the need for following orders in a military institution as you can't have people questioning orders in the heat of battle. Don't get me wrong as I am not anti-military. Where would this country be without our history of military force. I respect them, but I couldn't choose their life.
Which brings us to the next category of celebrities. Sports icons used to rank high on people's admiration list. With all the talk to steroids or as it should be called, cheating, how can you possibly idolize them. If it's illegal to use them, then you chose to break the rules. I realize it's an epidemic, but if you don't like the rules then don't play the game. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but I see how corrupt or at least morally ambiguous our justice system is and chose not to become a part of it.
Television and movie celebrities are not much better. They get paid millions of dollars to entertain. Sure they put in a lot of hours and sacrifice for their craft. But I would work just as hard and long of hours if someone was willing to pay me millions for it afterward. The problem with celebrities is that they are too rich and they have no idea what to do with their money. They buy 2 & 3 houses, with a yacht and still have boatloads of money left over. They get involved with drugs, alcohol or affairs because they feel invincible or are just trying to escape the pressures of a public life.
Don't even utter the word politicians in this discussion. They are the crookedest profession out there. All they care about is pleasing the lobbyists and getting reelected. They don't really care about making a difference. If they did, they just get swallowed by the machine and silenced. Why should a politician get paid millions of dollars for doing the job they do? Senators can and do, vote to give themselves a raise for all their hard work. I wish I had that option on my job.
It's hard to find someone worthy enough to be admired and when you do you're always wondering, "What's the Catch?"
